Peter C. Farrell, PhD, DSc, Founder and Chair at ResMed, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in health care administration.

For nearly 30 years, Dr. Farrell has served ResMed as chair, founder, and chief executive officer, stepping down from his CEO position in 2013. A healthcare organization established in 1989, ResMed is responsible for more than four million cloud-connected devices for patient monitoring to aid in the treatment and management of respiratory conditions such as sleep apnea and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Now a non-officer employee of ResMed, Dr. Farrell also teaches as a visiting professor at the University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney), a position he has held since 1990.

Prior to these appointments, Dr. Farrell served a number of institutions in a variety of roles. From 1984 and 1989, he was a managing director, member of the executive committee, and vice president of Baxter World Trade Corporation and the Baxter Center for Medical Research. He also served UNSW Sydney as a lecturer and professor from 1972 to 1989. Earlier in his career, he was a research assistant professor at the University of Washington, an industrial liaison officer at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and a research engineer at Chevron Corporation. He commenced his career as a research engineer for Union Carbide Corporation in the mid-1960s.

Coming from a family of engineers, Dr. Farrell naturally delved into the field of chemical engineering. He received a Bachelor of Engineering from The University of Sydney in 1964, followed by a Master of Science at MIT in 1967. Soon thereafter, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Washington in 1971. After obtaining some hands-on experience in the field, he returned to his studies and earned a Doctor of Science from UNSW Sydney in 1981.

Alongside his primary endeavors, Dr. Farrell has been a director of NuVasive, Inc., since 2005, a health care corporation which markets and develops products designed for the treatment of spinal disorders. In addition, from 2007 to 2014, he served QRx Pharma as their nonexecutive chair. Throughout his career, he has also held prominent roles on the executive council of the division of sleep medicine at Harvard Medical School and on the visiting committee of the Health Sciences and Technology Program at MIT. Among his notable accomplishments, Dr. Farrell takes the most pride in the Farrell Family Foundation, a nonprofit organization established in 2001 that promotes the betterment of society through the support of education, human welfare, and the arts.

The author of more than 150 peer-reviewed articles in esteemed journals, Dr. Farrell maintains affiliation with several organizations in his areas of expertise. He is an honorary member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, Engineers Australia, and the Australian Institute of Management Education and Training Pty Limited. He is also a member of the National Academy of Engineering, the Princeton Club of New York, the New South Wales Golf Club, and the La Jolla Country Club.

In recognition of his exceptional achievements, Dr. Farrell has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. A fellow of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering, he won the Chancellor’s Medal from the University of California, San Diego, in 2016. Named Australia’s Entrepreneur of the Year in 2001, he was also named United States Entrepreneur of the Year in Health Sciences in 2005. Furthermore, in 2018, he was the recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award.
