Title: City Manager (Retired)
Company: City of Palo Alto
Location: Franklin, Virginia, United States
June Fleming, Retired City Manager of the City of Palo Alto, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in general, financial, fiscal, personnel and organization management.
As a city manager, Ms. Fleming was responsible for the operations of the city under a city council – the policy was set by the council and then it was to be executed by the city manager. She became interested in her community after moving to the area and becoming involved in the library. She applied to the Merrill Foundation Grant to attend Stanford University for business. Upon returning to her community, her manager told her that she had so many career options in front of her. Weighing her options, Ms. Fleming settled on a position as special assistant to the city manager. Since then, she remained active with the local government until her retirement in 2000.
Growing up, Ms. Fleming was always interested in reading and going into the field of library sciences was a natural fit for her. She first earned a Bachelor of Arts from Talladega College in 1953 and a year later received an MLS from Drexel University. In 1954, she began working at a library in Brooklyn before becoming a high school librarian for the Little Rock Public Schools. From 1960 to 1966, she brought her library sciences skills to a teaching position as an associate professor at Philander Smith College. In 1968, she became a library director for the City of Palo Alto. It wasn’t until 1980 when Ms. Fleming started in her role as assistant city manager. In 1992, and until her retirement in 2000, she served as the city manager for the City of Palo Alto.
In her career, Ms. Fleming was honored with the Woman of the Year Award from the Women’s Resource Center in Palo Alto. She considers this honor to be one of the top highlights of her career, along with receiving a Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy. Furthermore, Ms. Fleming has served as Chair of the Presidential Selection Committee, Chair of the Paul D. Camp Community College Local Board and the President of the California Library Association. She was the Correspondence Secretary for Delta Sigma Theta in 1993 and has maintained professional affiliation with the International City Managers Association, as well as her church, the United Methodist Church.
